Democrats opened their virtual convention Monday with an evening of sharp attacks on President Trump and vocal support for Joe Biden, including from four moderate Republicans and Biden’s primary opponent, Bernie Sanders. The daughter of a Covid-19 victim blamed Trump for his death in a brief appearance at the Democratic National Convention.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said President Donald Trump didn’t even see Covid-19 coming in remote remarks during the first night of the Democratic National Convention. He said the persistence of COVID-19 in the U.S. is a “man-made threat by our own negligence,” and blamed the Trump administration for its response.

Cuomo made a pre-recorded speech on the first night of the Democratic National convention, which is being broadcast via livestream because of the pandemic.

President Donald Trump unleashed a barrage of attacks against Democratic rival Joe Biden on Monday during a string of mini-rallies in Midwestern states that were designed to counter the start of the Democrats’ national convention.

Over the course of three speeches, Trump painted Biden as an existential threat to the U.S. and made a series of misleading or exaggerated claims to make his point.

The president said in Mankato, Minnesota, that Biden is a “puppet of left-wing extremists” who would “eliminate our police” and “indoctrinate our children.” Biden, whose career in politics has been marked by his support for moderate policies, would lead to the U.S. becoming a “large-scale Venezuela,” Trump said at an event in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
